Stac Pollaidh route map

Today we climbed Stac Pollaidh. The car park was super busy so we had to park a mile up the road. Dad doesn’t like climbing when it’s busy – “it’s like a day out in Butlins,” he complained. Butlins is a holiday park which was popular when Dad was a boy – a long time ago. The first part of the walk was steep, we walked through ferns which were infested with midges. The next section was less steep and we followed the path up over moorland covered with heather. The path led us to the back of the mountain where there was a magnificent view of Suilven. There ways another steep climb to the ridge. We left my mum on the ridge to rest whilst Dad and I carried on for some scrambling. It was steep and quite tricky. At one point we had to bum shuffle over a ledge. If we fell, there was a huge drop into a rocky gully. We didn’t quite make it to the summit because the last pinnacle needed rock climbing and ropes. The descent was easy and I ran on ahead.

We got up early and arrived in the car park just after 8.30 am. We followed the track for 5 km u TIL we cam to a footbridge. A little further on, past the small loch, amazingly we saw an added basking in the sun. I’ve never seen an adder in real life before. I was a little bit frightened. We began the arduous climb up the steepest part of the mountain. Breathing hard we scrambled to the summit. Breathless and elated we stood on the top. There wasn’t a breath of wind so the midges were on the attack. Luckily they preferred dad to me. Descending was hard on my knees but easier than going up. The walk back seemed to last years. Exhausted we arrived back at the car park.

Ruby Collin Mountain Adventures

Hi my name is Ruby Collin. I am nearly 11 years old and I like climbing mountains. I started a couple of years ago with little hills and have now progressed onto bigger hills. My Dad loves mountain climbing and he has started me on my journey.

My site is called disploring because it is a word I used when I was little and couldn’t pronounce exploring! Disploring quickly became a word used in my family to describe any type of walk that we embarked upon.

I’m hoping to keep a record of all my mountain climbs here.
